What Is An Electrical Interval Meter?

Why Business Owners Should Know About Electrical Interval Meters

what is an interval meter

An electrical interval meter is a device that measures the amount of electricity consumption over a certain period of time. It is typically installed in businesses or homes to monitor the amount of power consumed by various appliances or electrical systems. The meter records the amount of electricity used in intervals, such as 15-minute or 30-minute periods, and then stores this information in a log. This data can then be used to calculate the cost of electricity usage and identify any potential problems or inefficiencies in the system.  Since these meters have communications attached and are remotely read they are known as Type 1 to 4 meters and have also been called "Time of Use" meters.

Business owners can benefit from reading their electrical interval meter in several ways. First, monitoring electricity usage can help business owners identify potential areas where they can save money on their electricity bills. By examining the meter's records, business owners can identify which appliances or systems are using the most electricity and take steps to reduce their energy consumption.

For example, if a business owner notices that the office refrigerator is using more energy than necessary, they can replace it with a more energy-efficient model. This can lead to significant savings in the long run.

An interval meter can also help business owners identify any potential problems with their electrical systems. The meter can detect any spikes in electricity usage that may indicate a malfunctioning appliance, lighting, or any other system. By addressing these issues early, business owners can save time and money on repairs and minimize the risk of electrical fires or other safety hazards.

Finally, reading an electrical interval meter can help business owners better understand the amount of electricity they use and how they use it. This information can help them make informed decisions about their electricity usage and identify areas where they can reduce electricity costs. For example, if a business owner notices that their electricity usage tends to spike during certain times of the day, they can adjust their usage habits to reduce their overall electricity consumption and save money.  In summary, electrical interval meters can be a valuable tool for business owners. Business owners who monitor their electricity usage can identify potential areas where they can save money, identify any potential problems with their electrical system, and make informed decisions about their electricity usage.

Be sure to stay up to date on interval meter rules in your state. For example, AES Ohio requires electric choice businesses with peak demand that is equal to or exceeds 200 kW within the last 12 months to install an interval meter.
